Hand –
The combination of cards you hold in your possession during the extent of a game.
Bet –
A wager; the risk you are taking in order to play the game.
Pot –
The sum of money players attempt to win.
Fold –
Forfeiting the game.
Muck –
A pile of cards that have been folded.
Showdown –
The last round in a poker game where players show their cards to declare the winner.
Raise –
Increasing the size of a bet.
Ante –
A bet everyone playing must enter in order to play the game.
Blind –
A bet made on top of the ante before the game has started.
Open –
Volunteering the first bet of a game.
Call –
Matching another players bet.
Check –
Choosing not to open and the same as betting zero.
All In –
Betting everything to stay in a game.
Stack –
Money in a player’s possession.
Rank –
The number or letter on a card. A (high), K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A
Suit –
The 4 different shapes on a card: Diamonds, Spades, Hearts and Clubs.
Straight Flush –
a hand where the cards are of the same suit in escalating order.
Four of a Kind –
a hand that contains 4 cards of the same rank. Also known as Quads.
Full House –
a hand that contains 3 cards of the same rank and 2 cards of another rank. Also known as Full Boat.
Flush –
a hand where all 5 cards are of the same suit.
Straight –
a hand where all 5 cards are in escalating order.
Three of a Kind –
a hand that contains 3 cards of the same rank. Also known as Trips, Set or Prile.
Two Pair –
a hand that contains 2 cards of the same rank and an additional 2 cards of another matching rank.
One Pair –
a hand that contains 2 cards of the same rank.
High Card –
a hand that has different ranks and no sequence. Also known as a no-pair.
