As if the nation of Pakistan didn’t have
enough to worry about with the flooding that has crippled communities and
destroyed lives, the world of online gambling is also looking to their
cricket team in relation to a betting scandal, catching in particular the
attentions of the Australian, and British authorities. One person has been
arrested in relation to the case, as British police took into custody
Mazhar Majeed, a bookie accused of being involved in the scheme. Authorities are also looking at four players from the Pakistani team, in addition to captain Salman Butt. Cell phones were reportedly among the items confiscated for further investigation. According to the accusations, though officials still say an active investigation precludes them from making any definitive claims as to what may have happened, two players have been accused of deliberately cheating by stepping over the ‘no ball’ line at pre-arranged moments. According to a report by the ‘News of the World’ paper, interviews were being conducted by police that had them looking at the possible involvement of Bowlers Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Asif and wicket keeper Kamran Akmal. The article says that under cover reporters set themselves up as Eastern businessmen to set the players up, hiring a middleman with a pricetag of £150,000 to help them, providing exact details that three no balls would be bowled during the game against England. The success of the experiment got the police involved. The latest infraction comes with the unfortunate reputation that its not the first for the Pakistani team, which has been the subject of a number of inquiries since the 1990’s. Even this year, in May, the team was examined by the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit for their especially poor performance against Australia, resulting in an un-characteristic loss. |
