The bets in favor of Collins being the mystery man were overwhelming over the last week, with some coming in for as much as £500, with Paddy Power leading the pack in cutting the odds for Collins and then suspending the bet altogether. Whoever might be behind the helmet, The Stig isn’t the first one. The show launched with Perry McCarthy behind the wheel, and he was retired from the show after his identity was revealed in 2003, giving the opportunity for a new Stig to step in. Punters have noted that that year, 2003, was also a significant year for Collins in his public career, with some going so far as to describe it as ‘the cornerstone year’ for the driver. Ken Robertson of Paddy Power said this week: “Betting really got out of hand over the weekend with scores of punters opening new accounts and placing chunky enough bets on Collins to be revealed as The Stig” said ken Robertson of Paddy Power. “As this stage it seems that the money has spoken and the name being shouted is that of Ben Collins.” Other possibilities when the betting was open included Russ Swift, Julian Bailey, and Chris Goodwin, among others.
