Russia Reconsiders

Some interesting news regarding the state of online gambling in Russia is making headlines at internet casino forums and news sites this week, with the beginnings of wonderings that the government might be reconsidering their position on gambling law on the whole. Only last year did the nation all but prohibit all forms of gambling, relegating casino operations to a few remote – and state-run sites – on the outskirts of the country.

That solution is apparently not resonating well with the residents of Russia, meaning that they are not generating any income. With operators and players alike clearly unhappy with the legal circumstances, the government is apparently willing to rethink their position, in hopes of attracting back some of the business lost to (illegal) offshore internet casinos.

According to a report by the newpaper RT, the heart of the matter comes with the fact that operators shut down throughout Russia are refusing to apply for licenses to operate in one of the four state-run regions. Their refusal to open up business have left the ‘gambling districts’ largely unpopulated, empty of the casinos they were designed to house. It has forced the draconian government into a position of needing to negotiate with the companies if they are to have any casinos at all.

One suggestion has been moving the state-run regions to places less remote, adjusting their positions closer to people. For example, it has been suggested that the southern gambling zone be shifted closer to the Black Sea, where more punters might be willing to travel to place their sports bets. Additionally – and perhaps more importantly – the authorities are looking into offering more than just gambling, considering building areas with likenesses to Las Vegas – remote and wholly unique with entertainment and resorts to attract tourists.

"Why can't we try and do something like that in Russia, without making the same mistakes?" said Kransnodar region's Deputy Governor, Aleksey Agafonov. "We can use the best that Las Vegas has to offer, refined by decades of experience. Essentially, we've come up with a new concept a family resort where gambling will be just one of the highlights."
