It seems that more than just the Russian
government are reconsidering their blanket prohibition laws against online
gambling as yet another nation has reportedly begun to take a second and
more closer look at the effectiveness of their ban against the industry,
as well as fiscal consequences. The Ukrainian government has said that
they are willing to reconsider the Draconian ban that is on gambling
within the nation’s borders during a Cabinet meeting scheduled for Monday.
Though the government was quick and enthusiastic about banning all gambling within the Ukraine less than 18 months ago, the consequences of such a decision are now becoming more clear, with some government officials wondering if regulation would better protect their constituents as well as supply the federal institutions with some additional taxation funds. Should they re-regulate the online gambling industry as well as land based casinos, the changes could take place just as fast, with new legislature possible as early as January of 2011. The timing could be very deliberate, should Ukrainian officials note that passage by January would have the new regulation structure up and running in time for the next major international football tournament, scheduled for 2012. Potential changes to the law will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting on Monday, though it will be a general overview; details on proposed changes have not been released to the online gambling community. The general opinion, however, is favorable to such a change, as current prohibition does nothing to prevent access to ‘illegal’ internet casinos, nor does it do anything for the government. Since gambling was banned, it has only encouraged those who would normally frequent live establishments to join the online market. |
