It seems that the online gambling
industry is still under fire from the Chinese authorities, as yet another
raid was reported in the strict nation, that resulted in police taking 17
into custody. According to a report by the Shanghai Daily newspaper, the
raid went down in the city of Changzhou, when police successfully took
down an illegal internet gambling operation that had done billions in
business over the last five years. The ring had been led by a man by the name of Zeng Weiquan, who was among those arrested by police, including 16 others. They also took the opportunity to clear the online gambling operation of 35 computers, as well as 40 million yuan in cash among the records seized by authorities. The gambling ring was successful with not only clientele within China, but also opened up their services to facilitate illegal betting for players from Taiwan, the Philippines and Malaysia. The ring was so successful, in fact, that they had customer lists topping out to more than 50,000 players. The action generated more than 3 billion yuan, equal to more than $437 million over a five year period. The bets were placed between two online gambling websites, which operated out of the Philippines and Malaysia, though their servers were registered in Taiwan. The names of the sites have not been published. The operation used another technology company as a front for access to computers that would log on to the online casinos. Police caught wind of the illegal operation following the arrests of a few customers in a different raid. The customers gave up information linked to the bigger scheme in return for a lesser plea. |
