The first prize placement for the
English Poker Open was determined this week, with the honors and awards
going to German player Fabian Quoss. He proudly took home the George
Trophy for the English event, along with a healthy check for £220,650 for
his performance, as resident poker pros and enthusiasts went home
disappointed that here wasn’t a domestic win for the tournament. Quoss
held his own against a field of 192 players for the No Limit Hold’Em game,
which cost a higher-than-expected buy-in of £3,750. The event, which took place at the Palm Beach Casino in Mayfair, London, attracted a healthy field of players that included well known names from both the live poker circuit as well as its internet gambling cousin. Sebastian Crul, Mathew Frankland, Felipe Ramos, Andrew Brennan, and Brent Lehring all showed up, as did Mark Norman, Salman Behbehani and Stephen Chimelski. It took three days of play for a final table to be established, a clear indicator of the high quality of competition for such a small composition of players. On the way to the end, even stars like Phil Laak, Thorston Schafer and Liv Boercee fell to the wayside. The heads up was finally determined with the eventual elimination of Matthew Frankland in third place. The remaining two players, Quoss and Sebastian Crul attracted some extra attention from the internet gambling community as both players brought a sense of determination and personal pride to the table that isn’t seen in every game. The excitement was short-lived, however, as German Quoss held tight to his advantage, pressing it effectively to leave Crul with nothing more than second place, and a consolation prize of £129,000 for his efforts. |
