With online gambling exploding in Canada
with provincial governments considering or actually legalizing internet
casino access through their lottery corporations, it’s logical that the
big players from Europe might want to get in on the action. One
publication suggests that at least one online gambling company has already
set up shop in Canada, as the Toronto Sun reported that the internet poker
powerhouse Poker Stars has moved into the North American continent,
looking for their piece of the pie. According to the Toronto piece, the Poker Stars server has been set up near Montreal in Quebec, within the jurisdiction of the Kahneawake Mohawk First Nation. But they may not be the only ones making such a move, as some experts, such as John Pliniussen of the Queen’s University, have said that Canada should expect an influx of internet gambling companies looking to cash in. “It’s fair game,” he shrugged. “That’s where the action is.” Solid confirmation has yet to be had from the online gambling company themselves, as no statement has been issued from Poker Stars regarding the rumor. The Sun said that not only have they made a move, but in fact, the development of their software was based in Canada, with PYR Software behind the programming, which has dealt more than 48 billion hands to their players. PYR was created by Poker Stars’ founder Isai Scheinberg in 2000. "The partnership has proved lucrative for the Kahnawake, which just this week announced plans to tap into its online gaming revenues to fund a multi-million-dollar wind energy farm project with a U.K. based company," the Toronto Sun read. Poker Stars currently hosts 38 million members, and generates an annual revenue of $1.4 billion, filing away some $500 million in profits every year. |
