A news update has hit the online gambling forums this week as legalization and regulation continue their trend of expansion in the North American country of Canada, with an announcement this week that Prince Edward Island is the latest regional province to consider legalization as a valuable option to help generate much needed revenue for the state government. According to a statement made by the finance minister for Prince Edward Island, the government is well into talks with the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, looking to be the next province to bring legal internet casino action to their constituents.

Though Prince Edward Island is one of the smaller provinces of Canada, the potential for the online gambling market there would certainly make legalization worth its while, with Finance Minister Wes Sheridan telling CBC that some estimates put the revenue potential as high as $50 million. At present, those betting funds are being siphoned offshore to foreign internet casino operators, monies that would be much more advantageous to be kept domestic. The priorities have become the development of a legal alternative domestically, providing that fair and responsible regulations can effectively be used to protect gamblers.

According to CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, legalization of online gambling within North America is a very hot topic, with many perceiving the progress being made in Canada as encouragement for the United States to follow suit. Nova Scotia is also looking at the possibility of following in British Columbia and Quebec footsteps; on the contrast, the premier for Newfoundland and Labrador has been very public about his opposition to the measure.

"What we're looking at, and what [Atlantic Lottery Corporation] has proposed, is to go forward and put a site up there to compete with these offshore entities and play in a regulated, policed kind of fashion," said Sheridan. He made clear that the cabinet will end up with the decision, but for now they are taking a close look at the proposal laid out by the Atlantic Lottery Corporation.
