An interesting story that reports on the
cross-roads between the online gambling industry and the real world was
popping up at internet casino news posts this week, with a down-to-earth
case of real life imitating fantasy courtesy of a simple sports video
game. The story developed around the scientific experiment being created
by the editor of the University of New Mexico, which turned out an eerily
accurate prediction five weeks ahead of time, and creating a fantastic new
advertising angle for the video game involved. The experimenter, who has wished to remain anonymous, wrote up a piece based on a sports video game, purchases for $39.95 and developed by the game program company Electronic Arts. The game was used to accurately predict the outcome of an American football game, which virtually and hypothetically set the University of New Mexico’s Lobos team against a college team out of Oregon. Both members of the NCAA, the article’s editor took into consideration the most current stats on both sides, and determined that Oregon would likely beat out his alma mater’s Lobo team with the embarrassing final score of 72 to 3 for the computerized game. The published article itself created quite a stir, with EA Sports NCAA Football league predicting the outcome, and causing the author to admit how embarrassed he was of his home team’s poor performance in the virtual match. He used the game’s results as a basis to summarize what he believed to be wrong with the University’s program – an editorial piece that got him some heavy and negative attention from the Lobos’ coach, reprimanding him for such an article based on nothing more than a cheap video game. In the end, to the online gambling community’s amazement, the editor had the last laugh, with the real life game being played out between the two colleges just 5 weeks later. The final score? Oregon managed to earn themselves 72 points, and New Mexico failed even to score a field goal for their 3, ending the real life match with zero points on the board. |
