One of the leaders in the American online gambling community launched last week what they are called the ‘Players Before Profits’ campaign, an effort by the Poker Players Alliance to encourage poker players from around the nation to sign on and voice their disapproval of the oppositional forces lined up against the state’s efforts to legalize an intrastate poker system. The effort would be inordinately beneficial in two principal ways – giving online gamblers exactly what they want, at least in California, and providing the state government with desperately needed funds from the taxation of the new program.

The ‘Players Before Profits’ campaign, however, is getting some flack of its own, with the director of one of the land-based poker rooms that fears it might be negatively affected by the legalization of online poker, Tom Malkasian, speaking out some distinct criticisms in response to the forum. In a twist of fate, though his Commerce Casino was originally dead set against the intrastate poker program, they have recently changed their tune to partner with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians in a bid for exclusive rights to the proposal. That way, apparently, they ensure that if the inevitable comes to pass, and internet gambling is legalized, they, at least, protect themselves by covering their bottom line.

It hasn’t stopped Malkasian from speaking out on behalf of the company saying that the move to launch the Players Before Profits forum is putting the American poker industry in grave danger, by trying to open a door that will eventually lead to millions of American dollars finding their ways to offshore internet casinos.
"Federal and state regulation of online poker is coming and we can either fight to ensure that poker players' interests are protected or allow illegal foreign operators, who are siphoning millions of American dollars out of this country, to dominate the U.S. market,” he wrote.
