According to a report by the store owner Shawn Noel, the unfortunate circumstances unfolded when a player decided not to buy a ticket printed by the clerk. Apparently, the player, a woman who has not been identified, asked for a $12 lottery ticket, but the clerk printed out a ticket that would have cost her $27. “The [clerk] printed it off and made a mistake on the machine, and it came out $27. She offered it to the customer but she said, no, she didn't want it,” said Noel. The ticket was therefore voided, and the numbers were put back into play. No one else drew the same numbers, for if they had, the $30 million would have been theirs. It was unfortunate for Noel as well, as the winning store is entitled to a one percent share in any winnings, meaning they would have gotten $300,000. A statement in regards to the story was also issued to the inquiring internet gambling news reps by Jennifer Dalton, courtesy of the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, who said, “There's going to be lots of people out there reconsidering whether they want to cancel tickets! It was big news for us, certainly, here around the office. To our knowledge, we've never had such a potential of a winning prize, being so large, for a cancelled ticket."
