The second day of the World Poker Tour Legends of Poker began with a bang this week, as famous names well known not only in the online gambling industry but by the pop culture world as a whole continued to vie for the title. The ninth edition of the tournament, hosted by the internet gambling company Party Gaming, managed to attract a significantly larger entry field than they did last year, bringing in 66 percent more participants than in 2009. The reason? The organizers dropped the buy-in price by a whopping 50 percent, charging the stars only $5,000 instead of $10,000 for their chances to win.

The result was clear, as 462 poker players showed up to try their hands (pun intended), a huge improvement over last year’s 279. On the contrary, the prize pool dropped, from $2.15 million to $2.63 million. It was enough to pay out the first place winner a nice paycheck of $750,000. The prizes went all the way down to 45th place, causing some fierce competition for the first couple of days of play as players fought to stay in the game long enough to cash out. Representatives from all poker fields were present, including as well 6 different former World Poker Tour champions.

The Legends of Poker game is one of the favorites for fans, as it literally brings out the stars, giving plenty for railbirds to watch. Kathy Leibert is among them, significant as her participation in this tournament marks her 100th World Poker Tour Championship. Leibert is a big player for the women’s poker market, setting a number of impressive benchmarks for ladies, said Mike Sexton, having made it to the final table for six tournament, cashing out in 15 games, and taking home more than $1.75 million in prizes. The only thing eluding her seems to be that main event title, as it will once more: Leibert was eliminated by the end of Day 1a.

Two hundred and forty one made it through to the second day, including well loved names such as Phil Hellmuth, Jonathan Little, Adam Levy and Joe Sebock. By the time the game reached level 12, only 115 players remained, with the leaderboard as follows: Vinny Vinh in the lead holding 530,000 in chips, followed by Adam Schiffer, Tom Braband, Phil Collins and Tim Phan.
