The online gambling news is flooding out
of Canada in recent weeks, as one province’s leadership announced that
under no circumstances will he allow legalization of internet casinos,
while the another state has had to deal with the embarrassment of their
site being down for 35 days straight. PlayNow.com, based in British
Columbia is up and running once again, with the attention now being
directed to Newfoundland and Labrador, as Premier Danny Williams publicly
renounces the possibility of internet gambling in his region. There is still a chance that he can be persuaded, of course (there’s always a chance), but in the worst case scenario that he doesn’t neighboring Nova Scotia’s government has said that they will pursue the legalization efforts, following in the footsteps of British Columbia and Quebec, and going it alone if need be. According to a statement by the finance minister for Nova Scotia, Graham Steele, his province is not dependant in the least on the decisions made by Newfoundland and Labrador. Though both states fall under the Atlantic Lottery Corporation’s jurisdiction, as are others, Nova Scotia will not be deterred or affected by their neighbor’s decision, and will move ahead with intentions of setting up online gambling services for their constituents. The Atlantic Lottery Corporation has serviced the four provinces for years, and each contract is different, with states choosing games as they see fit and profitable. “The Atlantic Lottery Corporation is a venture of the four Maritime Provinces but they don't need unanimity on any particular item to move forward," he said. "We could go ahead without Newfoundland and Labrador if that's the result of the gaming strategy that's currently under development in Nova Scotia." |
