The 2010 World Series of Poker Europe has seen its start this week, with the first tournament launching at the Empire Casino in London, England. It’s the fourth time that the World Series brand has held a Series in Europe, with the attendance rates improving with each year, as it did again this week. As might be expected, the games offered by the Series have managed to attract some of the top names not only from the European community, but from all over the world – players looking to travel and play. Likewise, names well recognized by the live tournament community were side by site with internet gambling stars, demonstrating the increase in crossover.

The first event to start the Series off is the $2,500 buy-in Six Handed No Limit Hold’em. The game managed to attract 244 players to start off the Series. It marked yet another example of the growing popularity of the Six Max game; earlier this year, the US World Series of Poker held in Las Vegas, Nevada hosted an even more impressive 1,663 entries for one of their six max games, with yet another hosting 1,245 players.

The players for the game certainly ran the gamut of famous names from the internet gambling community, as well as their live tourney counterparts. Tom Dwan competed against Michael Mizrachi; Phil Hellmuth was playing against Justin ‘Boosted J’ Smith, and Phil Ivey fought against the likes of Annette Obrestad. Other famous names filled in the holes, with Andy Bloch, Chris Ferguson, John Juanda, and Allen Cunningham trying their luck.

Despite the fame and attention of online gamblers everywhere, most were eliminated the first day, as only 31 players returned for round 2. Andrew Pantling emerged as chip leader, with 106,100, followed by powerhouses Jeffrey Lisandro, Chris Moorman, Javed Abrahams, Chris Bjorin, Tai Tran, Liv Boeree, Praz Bansi, and Phil Laak. The game has generated a prize pool worth £610,000, equating to 24 cash prizes. The winner will be awarded £170,802 once decided.
