Though the men have clearly let the
ongoing Million Dollar Challenge between Tom ‘durrr’ Dwan and Patrik
Antonius take a back seat to other, more important (read: lucrative)
events in their poker careers, apparently Dwan is looking to take on new
challengers for the future, in spite of the incompletion of the existing
Challenge. The original version has been going for nearly 18 months, with
still plenty of game to be played, but it’s a fact that either has escaped
Dwan, or won’t phase him, as he embarks this week on yet another challenge
with a wholly different player. The challenge was appropriately announced to the online gambling world via Twitter posts this week, with Dwan confirming that his next victim, ahem, excuse us, opponent would be 21-year old Daniel ‘Jungleman’ Cates. Cates is a student and economics major at the University of Maryland, who has signed up for the heads up against cocky Dwan, investing his money and pride for a chance to win a lot of money off the professional player. Not unlike the currently ongoing Million Dollar Challenge against Antonius, this new challenge will also consist of the long-term winner, necessitating the completion of 50,000 hands. If Cates manages to win, he will get back not only his $500,000 investment, but an additional $1.5 million as well, making for a total of $2 million. The pair will be playing $200 / $400 No Limit Hold’Em poker, played across a minimum of four tables, with the possibility of playing six tables simultaneously. The pair have already jumped in, putting in nearly 12 hours of play on their first session, and hammering out an impressive 5,829 hands by the time the duo signed off. Cates took the lead early on, going up on dawn more than a half a million dollars, with their biggest pot coming in at $192,983. Hopefully, the pace of this challenge will keep up in a more consistent manner than the one with Antonius. |
