An update has become available in
regards to the ongoing crackdown by Chinese authorities on illegal online
gambling activities in the country, with a press released issued by senior
officials from the government. Speaking at a conference, the leaders
confirmed that more than 1,400 different prosecutions on online gambling
schemes and their operators have been instigated since the beginning of
the promise made by the draconian government to rid the nation of all
internet gambling activity in the beginning of the year. Begun in January, the conclusion of August marks eight whole months of the crackdown, resulting in hundreds of arrests and billions in funds seized. In addition to cash seized by police during live raids, an additional 1 billion yuan has been frozen in financials for their relation to illegal internet gambling operations. All banks are forced and mandated to cooperate with the government, reported the People’s Daily newspaper, with all of them voluntarily freezing the funds to accommodate officials’ prosecution efforts. Some of the most serious cases have already been finalized, said the senior officials during the conference, including five cases that did as much as 30 billion yuan in business, and another 21 cases that topped out more than 5 billion yuan in bets. In the period, more than 130 different raids and groups resulted in arrests, all for the same charges in relation to their involvement of either operating or participating in illegal internet casino activities. Three hundred and twenty of the suspects were foreign, from surrounding countries such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao, the Philippines, and Malaysia. There seems to be no end in sight for the ‘crackdown,’ as officials said that over recent months they have managed to better all ends of the system to make it the most comprehensive and efficient as possible. Banks such as the People’s Bank of China have put in place tools that make it easy to freeze funds, in cooperation with the China Banking Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Public Security. |
