The final table will finally be
decided for the Main Event at this year’s World Series of Poker Europe
tournament this week, with the competitive field of players getting
narrowed down to the ultimate seating for the game. While it was
inevitable with as many big names that showed up that stars would fall
regularly, the last couple of days of play were particularly brutal for
well known poker pros, both from the internet gambling circuit and the
live players club. The game, a £10,000 buy-in game of No Limit Hold’em, saw the final selection of players cut down by two-thirds, dropping the number of players to a mere 22 poker enthusiasts in the last day, each vying hard for his place at the last seating, and a chance at the grand prize and gold bracelet. The fight to the top was fierce indeed, with the chip lead being taken by a number of player; Ronald Lee was at the top of the board by the end of the day, holding out with 947,000 in chips, barely ahead of his closest competition in David Peters and Andrew Pantling, holding 829,000 and 821,000 respectively. Though the top three are names largely unknown to the internet gambling community, Viktor Blom managed to hold on til the last, sitting in 5th place with the others, just one step ahead of a favorite in the online casino world, Phil Ivey. As enigmatic as Blom is, his charm did not help him keep the lead he had for so long, and he struggles now to gain back his lost advantage. The player who took 37th place was the first to walk away with a cash prize, and the remaining players, even if they were to go out next, would be leaving with a guaranteed £21,206 in cash. The total prize pool generated for the game came to a cool £3,460,000, a healthy total of contributions from the 346 players who signed up to play originally. Monday, the 22 players who remain will fight to the death for a seat at the 9 player table, including such tough competition as two-time WSOP winner Greg Mueller. |
