Online gamblers will want to know of the most recent bust on illegal gambling, this time not coming from Asia – where they run rampant and nearly daily – but a little closer to home in Canada. Police based out of Montreal, Canada confirmed that they were successful this week in taking down a major sports betting ring, which resulted in not only the arrest of ten people, but also of all those individuals pleading guilty to the charges laid against them for their involvement.

The ring was rather substantial, said the police spokesman, handling more than 800,000 bets over the course of 18 months. The total amount of money to have been bet and paid out in that time frame came to an impressive Cdn $26 million, making this particular illegal bookmaking operation one of the largest to be taken down in Canadian organized crime history. The investigators tracked a connection to the Montreal mafia in the weeks leading up to the raid, determining that the Family had received a cut of the profits in exchange for their original investment in the operation. They also provided protection services for the bookies, and were quite active in the collection of owed funds and bad debts.

The majority of the bets placed crossed international boundaries, laying wagers on American sports events including football, basketball and baseball games. Though ten were arrested and tried, a few of the names in the guilty parties stood out for their reputations, including alleged ringleaders Domenico Velenosi and Carmelo Cannistraro. All those in custody will be formally sentenced in January of next year. In Canada, illegal bookmaking can carry a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment.
