Yet another illegal gambling operation has been investigated and raided this week, this time in Singapore. It seems like the action against passive gambling has increased in Asia over the last few months, interestingly corresponding to the interest that some major internet and land-based casino corporations have expressed in regards to expanding their markets in Asia. Perhaps that’s why the authorities are cracking down so hard on previously anonymous illegal operations. This week’s victim in Singapore is one such example. Eight people were arrested during this week’s search, all making up parts of an illegal sports gambling operation. A nine hour sting operation went down in multiple locations across the western portion of Singapore. The range of those suspects arrested on scene varied in age from 25 to 53 years old; seven men and one woman were taken into custody. There were a myriad of technological items also taken, including such things integral to the operation as laptops computers, ledger books, and cell phones. A cash total approximating $9,000 was also seized. According to reports, the sports betting operation focused primarily on horse racing and football (soccer.) There are indicators that other sports were also bet upon, all through the internet. The Assistant Director of Specialized Crime Division at the CID, Superintendent Goh Lam Kiong had the following to say on the raid: “Police will continue to take tough enforcement actions against illegal gambling activities and will not hesitate to prosecute persons involved in such activities.” Evidently the arrests in Singapore will not be the last. |
