The number one support group and lobbyist for the game of poker, the Poker Players Alliance has developed and newly released the PPA Congressional Ratings Guide. With more than a million members in the Alliance, leaders of the association created the ratings guide as a guide by which advocates can measure which members of Congress, both in the House and the Senate strongly support poker by grading their voting records. The list, available to members of the PPA on the website www.congressionalpoker.com, gives a graded rating of the representatives to allow access to statistics of records. The Chairman for the PPA, a former Senator himself, Alfonse D’Amato, made a statement when the Ratings Guide was published: “As PPA continues its efforts to educate members of Congress about poker as a game of skill, it is important that PPA members know how their member of Congress stands on the issue of protecting their rights to play poker online.” He continued to say that the guide allows an ease of accessing the information, as well as contact information for the Congressional representatives in the guide. The guide for 2008 lists 258 members as scoring either a “D” or “F,” marking almost half as failures in the support of poker. There were 164, however, that scored a B or higher, that shows numerically their consistent and strong support of the game, promoting access to the skill in either land-based or online casinos. Members not listed in the guide were left out due to a lack of or incomplete voting records. Records that were taken into account include Congressional letters of support, the co-sponsorship of poker-affiliated bills, private meetings with the Alliance, and public statements in addition to legitimate votes on the floor. The PPA Congressional Rating Guide may be searched by state and zip code, and will be updated regularly as needed for accuracy. |
