And the battle in Ohio goes on.
Whereas the battle for and against Issue 6 in Ohio has to this point, managed to stay relatively true to political form, the lines have now been blurred as religion and churches are getting into the mix with their opinions. Unfortunately, with the new turn in the propaganda, it matters little the economic helps or restraints the casino in question might provide to the community, and instead becomes a never-ending argument of moral dilemma.

Issue 6, the proposition for casinos that will be voted on November 4th, has now been publicly opposed by pastors of the Richland Community Family Coalition. Other religious figures in the area are quickly taking up the cause. The leader for the movement seems to have been established as Ben Mutti, who led a rally against the prop outside of Mansfield City Hall last week. Thankfully, the content of the rally was minimally religious in tone, and focused more on Mutti’s goal of discouraging the idea of a casino in the area, stating it to be potentially damaging to the region. Mutti conveniently avoided the mention of the thousands of new jobs a casino would provide, as well as failed to mention the generation of income that might make the difference in an area already suffering heavy effects of the nation’s economic status.

Mutti, and those pastors who are following his cause, are of a different opinion. Reverend Al Akuchie of Godsfield House of Prayer made a statement implying that in times of trouble, answers have been historically found in the Bible by the leaders of men. “In light of the global financial crisis, now more than ever wisdom is needed on decisions regarding financing… The regional church of Richland County recognizes this, and clearly believes that casino gambling will create more problems than it will solve,” he said.

Though recently, the loudest, the Richland pastors are not the first religious sect to speak out against Issue 6. Advertisements have been newly erected, sponsored by churches, encouraging voters to choose ‘no’ November 4th. Only time will tell whose cause will win out.
