An American citizen has walked away with the Grand Prize granted by winning the PokerStars European Poker Tour London £1 Million Showdown. Jason Mercier managed a repeat performance taking away the title, as he also won the San Remo tournament in PokerStars’ 4th season. The new victory added £516,000 to his career, a nice profit considering the £20,000 buy-in. The 21-year old from Fort Lauderdale, Florida was up against the best in the world including major names from the Team PokerStars Pro family: like Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, Joe Hachem, Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Greg Naymer, Victoria Coren and Chris Moneymaker. The event was played over two days for the fifth season of the EPT, and attracted nothing but the best for the affair. The final table included three WSOP bracelet winners, but Mercier managed to hold out over WSOP champion John Juanda, preventing him from taking the Double London title for the EPT. He did so by putting all in and forcing Juanda to call when he had exactly the cards that won him the San Remo event: a King and Queen. With an ace and jack himself, it was the flop that proved the end for Juanda, turning over a Js, Th, and 9s- the final appearances of a 5c and 3c sealed Mercier’s victory. Additional appearances were made by Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, Gus Hansen and Patrik Antonius. Fifth place was taken by legend Scotty Nguyen, as ninth place went to PokerStars Pro Isabelle Mercier. Million Dollar Man for PokerStars Dennis Phillips trailed, finishing in tenth place. |
