The latest craze rendering smoking illegal in public places across the nation is putting some major casino construction plans in jeopardy. Because smoking would be prohibited in the open areas of the casinos and resorts, the bans create a specific problem for the lounge atmosphere related to many poker rooms, and the like.

One of the most recent examples of the issue has arisen in Kansas City, Kansas where plans to build a major casino near the Kansas Speedway may be threatened by the new state law. Jeff Boerger, President for the Speedway, was reported as saying that if the ban were to be passed, it would put the casino agreement at risk.

Oddly, Cordish Company, one of the partners for the development of the casino, negated Boeger’s statement pretty quickly, putting on record that, “We're excited about being involved in the community. We have committed a lot of time and resources into the project and we're working hard on it.” The statement was received from Joe Weinberg, Cordish Principal.

The development has been months in the making, a delicate project built by the cooperation between Cordish and their creative partner the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino partners, and International Speedway Corporation- the parent company for the Kansas Speedway. Last month marked a success for all the hard work invested when the agreement was approved by state officials the right to open and operate the casino. Meanwhile, the smoking ban was originally proposed to exclude areas that would be detrimentally effected when it came to casino property, including the main gaming floors. Four of the Unified Government Commissioners opposed the exclusion, however, wanting all public places regardless to have smoking prohibited.

If the rumor were true, and Hard Rock was threatening to pull out of the deal, they would want to do soon, considering the final approval for the project is set to be signed by the end of the year. Once that point is reached, there will be no turning back, unless Hard Rock were willing to sacrifice their $25 million privilege fee.
