The World Series of Poker, Europe concluded this weekend with Californian John Juanda coming out as reigning champion. The Full Tilt pro finally took the tournament to conclude the longest last table game in the history of the WSOP. The win was sweetened by adding almost $2m to Juanda’s competition winnings, taking away the last table’s pot at a value of £868,000; a pretty profit for the Main Event £10,000 buy-in. The table had gone on for nearly 21 hours when Juanda’s break came, putting him in the lead against stern-presence Russian competitior Stanilav Alekhin. The cards were out to the tune of QhKc7c (queen of hearts, king of clubs, seven of clubs) with Juanda holding a king of hearts, and a 6 of hearts while Alekhin settled with a 4 clubs and a 3 of clubs. Juanda now had the 11-1 lead that eventually led to Alekhin’s demise. The final moves came when Alekhin pushed pre-flop with an ace and a nine of different suits in his possession. At the time, Juanda was holding a king and a six of different suits and the Russian still stood a chance as a 63% favorite to win the hand. When the flop came out with two sixes and another small card, Juanda jumped to 99% chances to win. Aleksin could not recover, and the Juanda took the Empire’s title and the £868,000 prize as the Tour continues. |
