Whereas the United States are still committed to the UIGEA and their ban of online gambling, Ireland has decided that regulation of internet casinos is the means by which they can bolster the economy against any trickles from the American recession. The regulation of online casinos, the Irish say, will provide for jobs and income into the nation, bringing revenue where there was previously none and providing for families all across the nation. The Gaming and Leisure Association of Ireland is the body behind the movement, and has put in a petition to the government to legalize online gambling in Ireland and creating statutes that would invite internet casino corporations to use the nation as their home base. According to the statistics published to the media, the association estimates that as many as 10,000 opportunities for employment could be created if the motion passes. Another bill has suggested that the legislation of land based casinos be transferred under the government’s jurisdiction; currently they are under private ownership as private clubs. If that were to go through, an additional 3,000 jobs would come of it. They estimate that monies resulting from online casino regulation could reach as much as $68 million per year. As Ireland makes these progressive steps, it’s difficult to not imagine what the effects of such changes would have in the United States. Especially when the financial circumstances have forced the Federal government into a $700 billion buy-out plan for the nation, it’s impressive to see countries like Ireland turn lemons into very fruitful lemonade. |
