As the ban against gambling-related advertisement is lifted in the UK, and screenings and regulation take its place, Google has decided to jump on the bandwagon and permit the ads to be seen on their search engine. The change comes as a big one, as since its establishment, Google has refused to host any sort of gambling advertisements. From now on, however, the company will accept announcements by companies who are registered with the Gambling Commission in the UK. The change will now allow ads that relate to searches run by the Google database will now appear in the results, providing the online casinos, and the like more opportunities to be sought out by consumers. Google will, however, be filtering the sites for content, and will limit some searches according the viewership. Anyone who has the ‘Safe Search’ application running on their computer will be prevented from seeing any gambling-related ads. The announcements will all be classified as ‘Non-Family Safe’ regardless of design or content, to prevent children from ever seeing them. James Cashmore, speaking on behalf of Google, said, “We hope this change will enhance the search experience for users and help advertisers connect with interested consumers.” The new policy will only apply in the UK, in coordination with the law change, but online casinos from outside Britain will be able to advertise as well, so long as they’re registered and licensed appropriately through their home countries. |
