There have been recent reports regarding the future of the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) of 2006. The reports seem to indicate that there stands an excellent chance for the Ban to be overturned following the 2009 Presidential elections.

Most of the indictors have arisen courtesy of Congressman Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee (HFS.) He also is the creator of a bill that would legalize and put internet gambling and casinos under profitable regulation as opposed to the totalitarian ban that has been in effect since it’s inception in 2006. Whether or not the nation’s state of recession has anything to do with further efforts to generate money flow in the US is yet unclear.

Frank’s bill to regulate has been previously defeated by the HFS, with a close 32-32 vote, placing it on the shelf for further consideration. It is the hope that a change in parties with this year’s election might be the force needed to get the UIGEA overturned early in 2009. In the meantime, small time politics, such as the misinformation provided by Alabama Representative Spencer Bachus, Republican, that motivated a number of Representatives to alter their votes to Frank’s support. Frank has been known to acknowledge that the bill regarding online casinos is not of the highest priority in the election year, but that he hopes with the new year, the issue can be put to rest and means to regulate can finally get under way.
