Texas is not alone in the crack down against illegal gambling machines, most popularly, video poker and simple slots. All across the country police are focusing on ridding places such as local restaurants, bars, quickie marts and even gas stations of the amusement machines that have, in some cases, been there for years. One of the newest locations to see raids spice up the town is in Flowery Branch, Georgia. The story is much the same as has been reported in recent months. Authorities conducted a string of investigations, gathering evidence against local spots that were to known to host games. As the process continued, locations that paid back prizes, credits, discounts, and other means to the players were eliminated as state law states that the gambling becomes illegal only if cash money is paid out to the winners. In this case, a Shell gas station on McEver Road fit the bill. During the raid, two men were arrested: Paresh Patel and Anjuna Patel, and were charged with illegally hosting a location for gambling, as well as commercial gambling. The location was zeroed in on with the help of the public, as police received complaints shortly before they took action. Calls came in that the Patels would pay cash to winners at the gas station, when the video machines hit jackpots. The search turned up approximately $1,400 that was seized by authorities, pending court decision. |
