As the 2008 poker tournaments begin to come to a close, the season looks to be ending. But for poker enthusiasts across the country, a new game might be filling the hole in their hearts, at least for the time being.

Dream Team Gaming is a corporation based out of Beverly Hills, California that are attempting to take the poker to a different, if not new, level. Whereas poker is very much an independent skill- players join tournaments of their own accord to take it all, or lose while trying, Dream Team Poker believe that creating camaraderie is the key to boosting poker popularity in the United States. They’ve created a new version of poker, that’s team based, instead of individual based. Tournaments are open to Team Poker players in teams of 3; the Private Premier Invitational will have a maximum of 25 teams, so 75 players total.

The players in Dream Team Poker still play poker by themselves, but there is an added dimension of point scoring that takes into account your fellow teammates’ performances as well as your own. The first trial will be held in Las Vegas, on November 7th- 9th.

Dan Delshad, one of the co-founders for Dream Team, made the following statement in regards to the new poker version: “We’ve put together a patent pending scoring system without changing how normal tournaments are run. A lot of difficulty in introducing it is in structuring it both for the general public and for the casinos to be able to manage the game.”

One of the advantages to the game is that even if you are eliminated from the tournament, you still have the possibility of winning cash prizes, depending on the scoring of your teammates. There are cash pots distributed to both individuals and teams. There are disadvantages as well. Because the game is yet unknown, possibilities such as team players conferring at the same table might become an issue, though the rules state that no team players will share a table until the total player count is down to 16. Their website then claims that strict observational codes and regulations will be enforced to ensure that players are acing in collusion.
