An interesting raid was completed successfully to the credit of local authorities of the state Capital of Pahang, Kuantan, in the Pennisula Malaya. The Malasian police had been generating an investigation of a number of cyber cafes in suspicion with illegal gambling. Apparently, the police were tracking the cyber cafes, who advertised public internet access. Once revealed the cafes were shown to be only a front for online gambling, as each of the computers had a secure log in to get back web browser bans to illegal internet casinos. Some of the patrons during the raid were unaware of the back-business, and were questioned and released. However, police arrested 12 men in connection to the crimes as well as seized 8 computers. The internet café owners were included in the arrest, as well as some customers caught utilizing the online casinos. All of the arrested suspects were of an age range between 20 and 40 years old. According to the local news agency Bernama, all were arrested and are being held in accordance with Section 4 (1) B of the Common Gaming House Act of 1953. The internet cafés in question had been licensed for offering online access for an hourly fee, and store operation licenses have been suspended until the case can be closed. In a press release, Mohd Jasmani Yusoff, Kuantan Police Chief ASP made the following statement: “The raids at Air Putih, Jalan Beserah and Gebeng found out that the cyber cafes had been utilized as a front for online gambling. The premises owners had abused the operating licenses given.” |
