The proposal set forth by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and his platform’s attempts to seize internet domain names of online casinos is drawing more attention than perhaps the Governor had intended, marking him as a new target for the growing supporters of the regulation, not prohibition of online gambling. Beshear’s attempt is now being perceived as a slight against freedom of speech. In response, a team of authorities on the issue have come together under the name of Bluegrass Institute; they met Monday to discuss the ramifications of the actions under debate in Kentucky. The Bluegrass Institute has been set up in order to reintroduce the basic ideas set up by America’s founding fathers, according to the director for communications and policy, Mr Jim Walters. He granted an interview to Poker News Daily and clarified that the group would be working together to identify means where ideals of “limited government, personal responsibility and economic prosperity” could be better instituted. When questioned about the domain issue in Kentucky, he was quoted as saying, “We think the issue is very serious and could have ramifications beyond the area of gambling. It’s an act of censorship. One of the issues that we’re promoting is more transparency and more freedom. This is certainly moving in the wrong direction.” There is a scheduled forum, set to take place the day before the court hearing in the case; subjects to be discussed are said to include the effects the move will have on freedoms on the internet, and in the world of technology. According to the press release, they are also to speak directly of what the results could potentially be should Beshear get his way. Possibly, the discussion could go so far as to touch on how move’s such as Kentucky’s will effect the United States’ ability to defend the EU’s investigation into protectionist trade policies. One of the dichotomies that need to be addressed is the contradictory allowance of permitting online horse betting and lotteries, while actively attacking online casinos. |
