Even as economic decline plagues great casino area such as Las Vegas, Atlantic City and even newly popular Macau, other regions are just considering getting into the online casino market. At the lead of this group with such interests is Bermuda, who this week publicly announced their interest in exploring gambling venues as a means by which to boost income in the nation. Some of the Island’s interest may very well stem from the success neighbors such as Barbuda, Costa Rica, and Antigua have had hosting online casino corporations, and being able to enjoy the tax revenue that stems from their profits. There’s a definite reason to hope for success were they to join the islands, marking them as ideal for such franchises to set up shop in Bermuda. Renee Webb, speaking on authority as former Tourism Minister had the following to say in support of the new interest: “I was publicly in support of legalizing gambling. Firstly, because it had already existed through bingo, horse racing, football pools, and Crown and Anchor.” And the conversation has not been limited to just online versions of casinos. Whereas legalizing and licensing the internet variety provide funds to the economy through taxes, the direct impact is limited to the number of local staffing online casinos would choose to keep on the island. Land-based casinos, however, provide a huge number of new jobs as well as income. No decisions have been made as of yet, but no ideas have been rejected either. Premier Ewart Brown told the press that a ‘feasibility study on gaming’ would begin next week. He said the subject matter of the study would range from internet gambling to lotteries. |
