Aces Wired, a well-established and successful corporation based out of Dallas, Texas has fallen victim to a recently developed hobby of authorities in the state: declaring the status quo as newly illegal gambling activity.

The company, licensed to distribute supplies and equipment for the game of Bingo has been shut down by the Texas Attorney General for the use of their AWP (amusement with price) games. The slots games, which offer simple themes and eight lines, allow players to accumulate points instead of cash, keeping them “legal” for intents and purposes. Apparently, at some point during the investigations, an undercover police officer was able to trade in his points for cash, giving the authorities the proof they needed to take Aces Wired to court.

A jury ruled that yes, the gambling machines were illegal. It is unclear just how far Aces Wired intends to appeal the decision. The raids over the machines put in police possession more than 100 machines, as well as $1 million in cash. The case holds importance not just because of the size and political power Aces Wired has been known for, but many are looking to the final decision to set a precedent for future cases in the “grey” area of illegal gambling.

Because the ruling indicated that the gambling element of the specific 8-liner machines was found to be illegal, prosecution felt they won. However, the popular amusement center, which allows patrons to play games for prizes, is still up and running; the state did not find it to be at fault in a punishable manner, Aces Wired enjoyed a bit of a win themselves. Representatives for the company claim that the incident regarding the undercover cop’s ability to trade his prizes for cash was a singular happening, and policies have been changes to prevent any such occurrence from repeating.
