This particular tidbit should be remarkably interesting to our European readers, and hopefully, some will be able to use the information to their own, um, financial advantages. A Swedish man has proven in court, and been reinforced by the judge’s ruling that taxes do not need to be paid for online casinos winnings based out of European Union, by residents of countries members to the EU. The online poker player, who has chosen to remain anonymous for all media reports, won his case in Swedish courts this week against tax legislation for his online jackpots. With two substantial wins being pursued by the tax authorities, one at least, is free from acquisition as the money was won in an online casino based out of the Isle of Man. Since the Isle is a member of the Union, the Länsrätten (the local county administrative court) deemed that taxes do not need to be paid to the Swedish financial authorities, the Skatteverket. The prize in question was valued at SEK 650,000 krona, equivalent to about $80,900. It came as a welcome ruling, in an unsure case, as the Skatteverket claimed the Isle of Man’s status as a territory of Britain laid it exempt from some tax laws. The judge disagreed. The other jackpot, however, was won in an online casino based out of Monaco, which is not a member of the European Union. The judge declared the gambler responsible to pay the taxes due on those funds, according to Swedish newspaper Östgöta Correspondenten. His basis in the law was formed on a stipulation in EU policies that claim any profits from games such as online poker are considered tax-free so long as they are within the Union. |
