Stanley Bet International has decided to step up as the first catalyst in a long awaited battle against the European Commission in regards to the economic rights for online casinos and betting groups throughout the EU. Their demand for ‘fair, open and equal access’ for all those members of the European gambling community makes the first step to what they hope will result in permitting any internet casino based out of an EU country acquiring legal access to the citizens of all the EU nations.

Their campaign has been titled Fair Play for Sports Betting, as the initial efforts will be focused on sports bookmakers and their services. The first measure of offensive action was an open letter from Adrian Morris, the campaign director, to the European Commission asking for open access to European markets. The message implored the EC president Jose Manuel Barosso to look only as far as the EU principals and laws regarding the free movement of services and goods in the Union for justification in their cause. The principal strength behind the ‘Morris’ letter stands with the final ruling on 2003’s Gambelli case in the European Court of Justice. That case confirmed the right of a sports betting operator to offer their services to EU member states so long as they were licensed within the Union themselves.

The following quote was pulled from the letter to the Commission: “Member states continued to act in an unfair, disproportionate and politically motivated way and to deny their citizens access to competitive betting services. The European Commission, as the defender of the EU Treaty, has not only the legal right to intervene, but, more importantly, the duty to do so.”
