The Poppy Appeal event is an annual fundraiser to benefit the charities associated with former British servicemen and women. It’s been an annual tradition in Great Britain since the first world war, founded by an American War Secretary who was inspired by a poem written by John McCrae. The symbol of the poppy was manifested in her efforts to sell the flowers to raise money for veterans. The tradition continues and this year’s event will include a Bingo tournament to encourage donations.

The Poppy Appeal Bingo Fundraiser will be taking place on November 14th at the guildhall in Chard, UK. Organizers Andy and Jenny Keaton are heading up this year’s efforts to support the British Legion, the leading charity in the nation that benefits ex-service people and their families. Doors will open at 6:30pm according to the press release, with the Bingo Tournament starting at 7pm. With Bingo being utilized as a tool in so many fundraising events, Mr. Andy Keaton had the following to say about the new addition to the Poppy tradition: “My father fought in the Second World War and was a proud member of the British Legion. The Legion supports veterans of all wars, not forgetting those injured in recent conflicts such as in Afganistan and Iraq.”

The first of the Poppy Appeal events was held November 11th, 1921- a mirror of America’s Veteran’s Day. The memoriam was in honor of the end of World War I, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, when citizens the world over stopped to remember those lost for freedom and peace. This year’s event has had prizes and money donated from a number of organizations, including the Somerset County Council. The Keatons are also encouraging and accepting any donations from local businesses in the Chard region.
