Following the long interval that preceded the Final nine for the World Series of Poker Main Event table, no one was more anxious to get back into game play than the tournament’s participants themselves. And after two days of action, as the players slowly dropped off to leave just 27-year old Ivan Demidov to vie against Peter Eastgate. The contest between the Russian and the Danish kept the world of poker on the edge of their seats for the hours it took for one of the two very strong players to come out on top. Eastgate has affirmed himself as the youngest winner of a WSOP Main Event title with his win.

Eastgate met up with Demidov to fight over the ESOP bracelet and a prize bucket of $ $9,152,416. For hours, the battle went back and forth, each determined to make large strides by winning big hands. Each young man took the lead with decisive wins of millions of dollars, only to hand it back once again next round. The final decision was a true example of the compeition- a big hand over a big hand, giving Demidov the second place honor to go with his $5million prize. As a 2d, ks, and 3h were revealed, Eastgate bet $1.25 mil and Demidov called. The Russian checked once more when a 4c was flipped, and Eastgate raised to the tune of $2 million. After a long moment’s thought, Demidov stakes his claim, check-raising with $6 million, more than half his holdings in the pot. When Eastgate called, the 7s saw Demidov calling all-in. he obviously didn’t expect his strong two pair (with 4h, and 2h in his hand) to be outshown by Eastgate’s wheel straight, holding an Ad, and 5s.

Eastgate’s new title of youngest winner ever strips the honor from Phil Hellmuth, who held the title for almost 20 years when he won at the age of 24. Born in Dec of 1985, Eastgate is only 22. His prize money of more than $9 million also puts him in the top 5 of all-around biggest wins for the game of poker.
