The chief executive retired just a few mere hours before doubts about his incredibly impressive schooling background were questioned in one of America’s top journalism magazines. From 1995 to 2008 Terry Lanni was the man that created the MGM Empire. He was at the forefront for many casinos being built such as the MGM owned Bellagio. Mr. Lanni was also in charge of MGM properties in Atlantic City, Reno, Detroit and Macau. Last year the company brought in over $7.7 billion. When Lanni started his tenure there was only one MGM owned casino now there are 17. It seemed Terry Lanni was doing everything right, which brings into question his reasons for retiring. At 65, Lanni is at the perfect age for the life of a retiree, but it is the article in the Wall Street Journal that brings up the most interesting reason: scandal. The Wall Street Journal published a story, a few hours after Mr. Lanni announced he was retiring at the end of the month, which questioned whether or not he actually received a MBA from the University of Southern California. The degree is indeed listed on Terry Lanni’s curriculum vitae, but Barry Minkow says he was unable to find anything in the school’s records indicating that Mr. Lanni graduated with an MBA. Barry Minkow is the San Diego private investigator hired to help with the article published this month. Lanni says he retired because it was the right time and he added it was time for a new generation of management. Kirk Kerkorian is the 91 year old billionaire casino operator, or the only man Lanni had to answer to. Kerkorian swears up and down the MBA article in the Wall Street Journal had nothing to do with Terry Lanni’s retirement. A spokesman for MGM gave a statement saying that the questions over Lanni’s education are “a repulsive result of media marketing” rather than journalism.
