Tokwiro Still Troubled

The announcement last week that the Cereus online poker network was found to host an encryption problem, leaving players vulnerable to having their accounts hacked into has still not been resolved this week. Though the parent company Tokwiro Enterprises managed to stay true to their word about launching a new Open SSL encryption to protect online casinos such as Absolute Poker and Ultimate Bet, within hours of its release, a hacking report was received.

The original problem was detected by Poker Table Ratings.com, an online gambling information portal which published that it was possible to gain access to players’ accounts as well as see their hole cards during active games. For a solution, Tokwiro moved fast, and even consulted with independent hackers to ensure that their ‘quick-fix’ was stable enough to last for a time. Apparently, they consulted with hackers on the low end of the totem pole, as the encryption flaw continues to be accessible for those who wish to hack.

Player advisories spread, fueled by both the player protection body of the internet gambling community, eCOGRA and the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, which supplies both casinos’ licenses. By the end of the week, a permanent new encryption program had been installed, accompanied by a statement by the chief operating officer, Paul Leggett that the threat was over. Only he was wrong.

“The update seems to use OpenSSL only for player actions such as hole cards, bets, etc. we have already been able to hijack a test poker account using the exact same methods,” read a report by the same Poker Table Ratings.com, just hours after the installation. Cereus once again responded quickly, but had few answers for the outcries save assurances that their technical team was working on patching the holes in the Open SSO encryption, and claiming that the vulnerabilities were almost under control.
