While most of the time, authorities are busy tracking down illegal gambling operations, this particular intersection between the online sports betting world and police comes to a head around snooker champion John Higgins. The player, well known for his accomplishments in the world of snooker, is under investigation by authorities for his part in a game-throwing scheme, broken wide open by a corruption sting instigated by the News of the World publication. The debacle has forced the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association to release a statement, formally admitting their embarrassment for Higgins’ alleged behavior. The champion is accused of having accepted a $400,000 bribe in exchange for his promise to lose certain frames during matches scheduled to be played later this year. The fact that the case is developing around arguably snooker’s most well known player makes it all the more mortifying for the Association, as Higgins is a three-time world Champion. Higgins accepted an offer of $400,000 from undercover reporters while visiting the city of Kiev in Ukraine, promising to lose particular frames in future games. It’s exactly the sort of behavior that fuels the opposition against online gambling, feeding the fears that internet gambling will only perpetrate corruption in professional sports. Higgins wasn’t alone, as his manager, Pat Mooney, was also involved in the scheme; Mooney has since resigned from his post in the game’s governing body; Higgins has been suspended. Snooker has been the target of a lot of price fixing and betting scams in recent years, covered by online casino sports betting sites, but not under the same regulation and diligence as football, and other like sports. “We're working so hard on revitalizing the game and there are lots of people pulling in the right direction,” said Barry Hearn, chairman of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. "But all we're talking about is the News of the World expose on John Higgins and his manager, which has left me feeling devastated. I'm not prepared to see the sport die under this type of publicity." |
