The details of the potential cheat would be difficulty to explain to many who don’t frequent the sports betting sites that are so powerful in the online gambling world, but chief executive officer for the National Rugby League seemed to grasp the issue without hesitation. The bet, for a mere $35 Australian, was placed a solid nine days before the announcement to the public, but the same day that the revelation was shared with the Storm’s Board. With odds of 300-1, the potential payout is substantial enough for Betfair to be concerned, especially considering the residual drop of 44 competition points following the confirmation of the salary cap irregularities.

''We will be providing all of our market information and betting details to them [the NRL] over the weekend,” said Betfair.com’s Hugh Taggart to the Syndey news community. “That's information we would have at hand, so that will be with them as soon as possible. We have the personal information of all our customers who bet, because all of our betting is account-based. We can trace absolutely every brushstroke of the keyboard. 'All of those account numbers are linked to a credit card and a name, so we can provide named information.''

All of the online gambling companies that operate in Australia were officially notified that no decision at all in regards to the stripping of competition points until Thursday afternoon. Until that point, no one should have had known anything that would have allowed them to make the April 13th bet, which leads the investigating parties to believe that the wager must have been placed by someone close enough to the Storm team to have made a seriously powerful assumption, guessing that the club might be stripped of all of their 2010 points. The alarm out to other groups has brought forward two other suspicious instances, which will also be looked into by both the NRL and Betfair.

One was placed with TAB Sportbet, who said that they received a bet for $200 that the Storm would end up with the spoon the night before the penalty was announced. The same firm said that a similar bet was placed, this time for $911, just hours before the news went public.
