It seems that the online gambling company Ladbrokes isn’t the only name in the casino world to have to report disappointing numbers for the first part of the year, as the Nevada Gaming Control Board released this week their numbers for the month of March for all the land-based casinos that call the southwestern state ‘home.’ While hopes were high that perhaps the disappointing effects of a poor economic market had passed, the drop once again for March had gaming officials wondering if the dry times were quite over yet. Part of the disappointment was no fault at all of March’s but rather stemmed from the double digit growth recorded for the month of February. Many online gambling analysts expected the turn-about to be a clear indicator of better times in Sin City, an assumption that now has the cold shadow of doubt cast over it. The double digits were instead followed by a loss – of only one percent – but marked a clear disappointment for the casinos which populate Las Vegas, as well as the Nevada Gaming Control Board, burdened with the responsibility to report the final figures. A drop in the revenues spent on gambling was registered across the board, totaling a total loss of less than 1 percent. Thankfully, the casinos registered on the Strip of their main hub city, Las Vegas managed to see a gain of 2.4 percent to $467.1 million, making a marked difference in the statewide averages. Without those profits, the state gaming revenues would have been down nearly 3 percent, said Frank Streshley, speaking as a Board official and spokesperson for the Commission. For the first quarter, the numbers are a little more hopeful, as the strong month of February has pushed the quarterly gains to 3 percent for the state, and 9.8 percent for the Strip. "It's a good start. We're still off back to where we were a few years ago, but the year has started off nicely,” said Streshley. "People keep using the term 'at the bottom.' I think we're going to be bouncing along the bottom for quite awhile. We don't see any reasons for major declines or major increases compared to last year's figures." |
