Macau, despite its close proximity to the conservative and Communist nation of China, continues to be a bustling resource for gambling in Asia, benefiting greatly not only from the land-based casinos they see flocks of Chinese residents visit to wager on their favorite games, but also acting as a haven for burgeoning online gambling companies not yet big enough to make the moves to larger licensing jurisdictions. The small island has been rife with action this month, with May shaping up to be one of the most profitable periods for Macau since before the worldwide economic crisis.

The numbers, though unaudited, provided through the online gambling industry analysts CSLA Limited, the casino revenue generated on the small island of Macau during the first 14 days of the month were ridiculously hopeful. According to CSLA Limited, the surge of profits were estimated to show as much as a 90 percent growth spurt compared to just a year ago, jumping up to 9 billion patacas from 2009’s total of $1.12 billion.

Macau stands apart from the crowd primarily for its location, the only legal location for gambling in the Chinese district of the world. China, in the online gambling world, is nearly exclusively known for their prohibitionary measures and efforts to eradicate the ever-persistent use of internet casinos by their residents through censorship and internet monitoring. The government’s efforts on the mainland has had a rather positive effect on Macau, as more escape to the island to bet, causing profits to skyrocket as China’s laws constrict.

Even compared with the first two weeks of April of this year, a 40 percent growth rate was noted, said Aaron Fischer, an analyst with CLSA. Macau operators are certainly taking advantage of the surge, however temporary, as they pay commissions to bring in more high rollers. April’s month end numbers showed an increase of about 70 percent from the previous year, making more than 14.1 million patacas in revenue. Local government was similarly able to confirm that gambling revenue for the first quarter was up 57 percent from 2009.
