While the state of Nevada continues to struggle with evening out their gambling sales, it seems, in an ironic twist of fate, that the Chinese are not suffering from the same dry betting spell. Though the Communist country is known first and foremost for their hostile perspective on online gambling, the state-sanctioned lottery seems to be a whole other world, as the lottery sales in China soared to new heights during the month of April. Gambling will seemingly continue to be a strong point in the Chinese communities, as they demonstrated last month. Bettors in the nation of China flooded the lottery retails shops, generating revenues that topped out 32,1 percent higher than was sold during the same period last year, reported the Xinghua news. More than 14.1 billion yuan was brought in, equivalent to $2.1 billion in US dollars. The most recent statistics were released by the Ministry of Finance, which included the first quarter sales, marked from January to April of 2010. Lottery sales soared, up 24.1 percent from the previous year, to a very impressive 48.73 billion yuan, equal to $7.13 billion in US dollars. The Chinese lottery is divided up into three parts for use and distribution – the jackpot to be awarded to the winner, lottery management fees, and the other third is given to the government, assigned for use as lottery public funding. It seems that playing the lottery is on the rise, as a big winner was also found in Britain. While China is most decidedly active against the online gambling industry, the UK stands as the hub for internet casino action. The jackpot holder, who had not yet been identified, is being called the single biggest lottery winner for the EuroMillions. The Press Association reported that he will be paid out a lump sum of £84.4 million, as early as next week. "This is absolutely fantastic news - and the biggest ever lottery win in the UK," the said lottery’s spokesperson. "Subject to a claim being received and validated, the prize could be paid out when the banks open on Monday. The winner can then decide whether or not to go public and share their news." |
