While most of the cases against illegal online gambling revolve around men looking to make headway in the industry despite prohibition, the latest story out of Malaysia actually involves three sisters who broke the mold by finding themselves arrested for their connection to the operation of an illegal gambling scheme. According to a report by the Star newspaper, the group arrested totaled five women, three of whom were siblings, and all out of the Kuala Lumpur region of the conservative nation. The raid by local police came at the tail end of more than two weeks of observing and investigation by the appropriate authorities, culminating in the raid and arrests. The women were found in an apartment near an industrial park. The raid in question involved quite a bit of business for the opportunistic ladies, and police reported that it saw as much as RM 2.4 million a month in wagers. Not many details were provided about the case, partly to protect the ongoing investigation, and partly to refrain from giving other illegal internet gambling operations any ideas. According to Superintendent Maszley Minhad, chief of the operation, police raided the apartment at a quarter to 7pm, seizing four laptop computers, six fax machines, five cell phones and an indeterminate amount of cash. The premises were under video surveillance. Meanwhile, Malaysia is not the only nation to be cracking down on illegal gambling, as the nation of Armenia has followed in Russia’s footsteps, limiting all forms of gambling to government controlled areas only. According to the Messenger Online, as of April 27th, the Armenian Parliament passed amendments to existing legislation that will become effective in January of 2013. There are only 11 land casinos and 103 other betting establishmenets in the small Eastern European country, all of which will have to move to one of the government run regions. The areas have been identified as the remote cities of Tsahkadzor, Kotayk and Sevan, as well as a few select locations like the Yerevan International Airport. |
