The Indian run gambling industry has been rife with news in the last months, as a number of states consider intrastate poker to support their starving budget gaps. The fight is full on in California, an issue that might very well have to shift with the appointment of a new chief to the National Indian Gaming Commission, nominated by President Obama last week. His choice of Tracie Stevens has yet to be ratified, but will at the very least, result in a shift of power to the new board. Stevens is a member of the Tulalip band of Indians, based out of Washington State. She is currently active as an advisor to the assistant secretary for Indian Affairs in the Department of the Interior, working closely with Larry Echo Hawk. Many are backing Obama’s selection of Stevens because she is not a lawyer, offering the possibility of what some are calling ‘a breath of fresh air.’ As Indian gaming enters a new era, filled with competition provided by online casinos, a new approach to the new world is exactly what the casino tribes need. Despite the support, the nomination will still need to be approved by the US Senate’s Indian Affairs Committee. It could well be simple; but the possibility that a number of other candidates will continue to fight for the position is ever-present as the tribes takes advantage of their exclusive casino contracts grows. Though American legislature is still technically prohibitive of online gambling, the inevitable changes that the gambling market will see in the coming year highlights in particular the leadership that the National Indian Gaming Commission offers. Assuming all goes well, Stevens will succeed George Skibine, who has been acting chairman in the interim. The Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar was also in support of the nomination, saying “The President was confident that she would provide strong leadership to the commission as it deals with the many complex issues associated with Indian gaming.” Her resume carries a bachelors in social sciences, live casino experience, business and administration management as well as a strategic planning background. |
