The rush has been picking up speed within the sports betting sector of the online gambling industry, with most internet casinos competing for bettors’ attention as the launch and start of the FIFA World Cup Tournament in South Africa creeps closer. Internet gambling businesses are not the only groups to be taking advantage of the moment, as the Right2Bet initiative are seizing the moment, hoping to use the drive to break the monopoly held by Germany in the market.

The latest report in the Right2Bet newspaper brought to light that legalization has never been more important in Germany than now, calling for the government to regulate as opposed to monopolize the industry. The call was initiated by the Germany Olympic Sports Federation, who are rallying for support in the cause, hoping that by coming together with the online gambling companies (who stand to benefit greatly) the government will reconsider their stand on legalization.

In addition to the Right2Bet initiative and the Olympic Sports Federation, Germany’s largest football league is also throwing their glove in the battle on the side of legalization, as the Bundeliga made public their desire to the the German Interstate Gambling Treaty of 2006 overturned. The Treaty currently mandates that the only online gambling to be done at all within state lines be completed through the State monopoly provider. All other forms of internet gambling – including sports betting on event such as the World Cup – are strictly forbidden.

The arguments being presented by Right2Bet and their partners are not particularly new, pointing out that competition between platforms serves only to benefit all of the parties, while encouraging new demographics of punters to participate. With regulation, the German government will only benefit through taxation. In fact a study competed by Right2Bet on the current regulation showed that “…German punters forced to bet with Lotto Bayern, are subjected to odds that are on average 34 percent worse than other private European operators.”
