But the excitement in the city of Monte Carlo did not abate with the conclusion of this year’s Grand Final, as one the fans and players alike (well, at least those who could afford it) made their way to the European Poker Tour Grand Final High Roller Event. One hundred and thirteen players ponied up to participate, paying €25,000 a piece to take their seats at the expensive tournament game, also hosted by the internet gambling group, Poker Stars.

Some of the big names from the Main Event were still present to give a show to the fans, with the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Gus Hansen, Tony G, Johannes Strassman, Lex Veldhuis, Barry Greenstein, Humberto Brenes, Dario Minieri, Sorel Mizzi, Jason Mercier and Vanessa Rousso competing for the top honor. Though she was the champion of the event last year, Vanessa Rousso was among those to be quickly eliminated on the first day. She wasn’t alone, however, as Negreanu and Greenstein joined her that first day, along with other noted poker celebrities such as Erik Seidel, Carlos Mortensen, Michael Timex McDonald and Boris Becker.

Forty one players managed to hold out until Day 2, with the lead held by Tobias Reinkemeier with almost a half a million in chips. He was a good 150,000 chips ahead of Luke Schwartz, his nearest rival. Markus Golser, in third, cooperated with the other leaders to eliminate Yvegeny Timoshenko, Gus Hansen, William Thorson, last years Grand Final runner-up Matt Woodward and Alex Kravchenko by the end of the day.

Though the final champion had not yet been decided at press time, eight players will walk away with money in their pockets, ensuring that the final table would be the only ones to make any sort of return on their €25,000 buy-in. Eighth will take home €85,000 and the High Roller Grand Champion winning €1 million. The winner is among the final table list: Lebanese player Dori Yacoub was in the lead, holding 1,199,000 with the others - Tom Marchese, Allen Bari, Germany’s Tobias Reinkemeier, Canadian Sorel Mizzi, Olivier Busquet, Paul Berende, and Austrian Michael Friedrich working hard to take his advantage away.
