The police are most often the ones tasked with the responsibility of catching those operating in the US online gambling business, though this week one story reveals that an officer of the law was in fact in much deeper trouble than just being part of an internet gambling scheme. The Miami Herald reported that the scheme was set up as a three-way blind, a plan to rob a man of $131,000 by Police Officer John Francisco Villar Jr, his cousin, and an online gambling operator. Villar, aged 28, conspired with an illegal online gambling operator to rob a man of $131,000 in cash after the winner had picked up his profits from a string of successful sports betting wagers. Local resident Marvin Duarte had been betting with Leonardo Lastre, who runs a gambling operation through the website Game Day vip.com. When his wagers came through, he made arrangements with Lastre to pick up the cash money. On Duarte’s way home from the pick-up, he was stopped by an unmarked car, containing two men: both in plain clothes, one of whom had a police badge around his neck and a gun on his hip. The other man stayed in the ‘police’ car, wearing a bullet proof vest that said ‘POLICE.’ The officer was John Villar, the passenger has since been identified as Villar’s cousin, Fausto Villar. Following some preliminary questions, Villar spied the money bad in the car and confiscated it as police property. Duarte was told that a narcotics officer and dog were on their way. Duarte reported that a weapon was used to threaten him to stay in the car, and Villar took off, the money bag and $131,000 in cash in hand. As the car pulled away, Duarte instead gave chase, until he came upon a Florida Highway Patrolman, to whom he provided the Ford Taurus’ plates. By the time on duty officers caught up with Villar, both the cash and his cousin were gone. Villar claimed to have stopped Duarte for reckless driving, and let him off with a warning. A case has been opened against Villar, and his cousin, though the online gambling profits have yet to be recovered. Officials determined the three-way scheme when phone records were checked, and Lastre was reportedly the only one who knew the time and date of the cash pick-up. Villar has indicated his intent to fight the charges against him, including felony armed robbery with a firearm, armed burglary, and conspiracy. Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Rundle said, “Essentially what he did is he became a hired muscle. These acts were pretty repugnant.'' |
